The Princess Louise Fusiliers

A Nova Scotia militia unit that had its origins with the formation of the Halifax Volunteers Battalion of Infantry in 1869 and later the 66th Regiment “Princess Louise Fusiliers.” In 1920, with the general reorganization of the Canadian Militia, the unit was redesignated as The Princess Louise Fusiliers. In 1936, the unit was amalgamated with the headquarters and “A” Company of the 6th Machine Gun Battalion to become The Princess Louise Fusiliers (Machine Gun) and in 1941 was redesignated as the 2nd (Reserve) Battalion, The Princess Louise Fusiliers (Machine Gun). During the Second World War, and after several name changes and reorganizations, the unit fielded two independent machine gun companies to provide heavy machine gun and heavy mortar support to the infantry brigades of the 5th Canadian Armoured Division in Italy and Holland. The 11th Independent Machine Gun Company (The Princess Louise Fusiliers) supported the 11th Canadian Infantry Brigade and the 12th Independent Machine Gun Company (The Princess Louise Fusiliers) supported the 12th Canadian Infantry Brigade. By the end of the war, both of these units were disbanded. Meanwhile in 1946, the 2nd (Reserve) Battalion The Princess Louise Fusiliers (MG) became The Princess Louise Fusiliers (MG). Over the post war years there were several minor name changes. The unit contributed personnel to the Canadian Forces in Afghanistan between 2002 and 2014. Today, the unit is now known simply as The Princess Louise Fusiliers and is classified as a primary reserve light infantry regiment. The unit perpetuates the memory of the 64th Battalion CEF.
