The Cumberland Highlanders was a Nova Scotia militia unit that had its origins with the formation of the Cumberland Provisional Battalion of Infantry in Truro, NS, on April 6, 1871. It was organized from four independent companies in Cumberland County. In June, 1885, the battalion was redesignated as the 93rd Cumberland Battalion of Infantry and in May, 1900, as the 93rd Cumberland Regiment. On April 1, 1920, as a result of the reorganization of the Canadian militia, the unit was redesignated as the Cumberland Regiment. On June 16, 1927 it was redesignated as the Cumberland Highlanders. Its headquarters was in Amherst. On December 1, 1936, as a result of another reorganization of the Canadian militia, the Cumberland Highlanders were amalgamated with the Colchester and Hants Regiment (less “C” Company) and “C” Company of the 6th Machine Gun Battalion to form the North Nova Scotia Highlanders (Machine Gun), later re-designated as the North Nova Scotia Highlanders.
