In the centre of the photo is Lieut. Percy Thorne Andrews, the commanding officer of the Machine Gun Section. He was born in Middleton, NS but was living in Bathurst, NB when he joined the 193rd Battalion in Aldershot, NS in July, 1916. While in England, he was transferred to the 17th Canadian Reserve Battalion , then the 185th Battalion (Cape Breton Highlanders), then the 17th again, and finally to the 85th Battalion (Nova Scotia Highlanders). He joined the 85th in the field in August, 1918. On September 6, 1918, Percy was wounded in action, receiving gun shot wounds to his hand and knee and burns to his face and hands. He was evacuated back to England for treatment where he fell ill with influenza. Percy recovered from his wounds and was demobilized in June, 1919.
