Names, service numbers and home towns were determined by comparing faces from the above photo with individual photos in the 193rd Battalion's picture book that was printed just before the battalion went overseas. Information was then cross checked with the 193rd Battalion's Nominal Roll and the online service records from Library Archives Canada.

* Sgt. Robert Lyons was born in London, England and was living in Glace Bay, NS, when, on July 6, 1916, in Aldershot, NS, he enlisted in the 193rd Battalion (Nova Scotia Highlanders). He was married and had seven years prior militia service with the 94th Victoria Regiment "Argyll Highlanders," a local Cape Breton militia unit. Robert was assigned the rank of sergeant and became band sergeant in the 193rd Battalion's regimental band. He went overseas with the 193rd Battalion in October, 1916. Upon disbandment of the 193rd Battalion, shortly after their arrival in England, Robert was transferred to the 17th Canadian Reserve Battalion in May, 1917, where he later became sergeant drummer in that unit's pipe band. In October, 1917, Robert reverted to the rank of private, and was transferred to the 85th Battalion (Nova Scotia Highlanders) who were serving at the front in France. Robert was killed in action with the 85th Battalion at Scarpe on September 2, 1918.
