Canadian Airborne veterans and family members pose in front of the stele commemorating paratroopers of the 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion killed in action in the Gonneville-sur-Mer area on June 6 and 7, 1944. Pte. Alexander Joseph MacInnis is one of the seven men whose names are inscribed on the monument.
Note that the veterans are wearing their French Jubilee of Liberty Medals on their right breasts. The medal is a commemorative decoration awarded by the French government to Allied veterans who participated in the Normandy campaign during the Second World War. It was created to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the D-Day landings on June 6, 1944.
