Pte. Albert Muir

North Nova Scotia Highlanders

In this undated studio portait photo, Albert wears a North Nova Scotia Highlanders glengarry and cap badge. Note the cloth "CANADA" shoulder title. The photo would have been taken sometime early in the Second World War before he joined the Cape Breton Highlanders.

Short Biography and Record of Service

Albert Muir was born in Stellarton, NS, on December 7, 1918. During the Second World War, Albert served in the Pictou Highlanders before joining the North Nova Scotia Highlanders and eventually transferring to the Cape Breton Highlanders. His service number was F87679 and he held the rank of private. Albert’s brother Claude also served in the Cape Breton Highlanders.

Albert was with the Cape Breton Highlanders when they sailed to Italy in October, 1943. On the night of January 3, 1945, north of Revenna, in northern Italy, Albert was in a jeep with three other men bringing up supplies to troops in the forward positions when they were ambushed by a German patrol that had infiltrated between the Cape Breton Highlanders' company positions. Their jeep was hit by an anti-tank projectile. Two of the jeep’s occupants, CQMS Manning Sparrow and Pte. Kenneth Symes, were killed. Albert, who was wounded in the attack, and a fourth occupant, Pte. Anthony Ducco, were taken prisoner. Albert’s leg was later amputated while in German captivity. He was destined to spend the remainder of the war as a prisoner.

Albert survived the war and returned home. He passed away on July 5, 1984.
