Circa 1916-1917

Standing in front is the commanding officer, Lt-Col. Daniel Hugh Sutherland, a native of River John, Pictou County.

In the row of officers standing immediately in front of the men, fifth from the right, is the Reverend Capt. William A. White, the only black officer in the unit. He was originally from Williamsburg, Virginia and was chaplain of the battalion.
