Three company sergeant majors from the 2nd Battalion The Nova Scotia Highlanders (Cape Breton) confer with a representative from the 22nd (Cheshire) Regiment of the British Regular Army. The two units formed a traditional alliance in 1931.
Left to Right:
1. CSM Alvin MacLellan (Support Company)
2. Unidentified representative of the 22nd (Cheshire) Regiment
3. CSM Dave Smith ("B" Company)
4. CSM Ross MacKay ("C" Company)
Ross MacKay was later the Regimental Sergeant Major of the battalion and was killed in an automobile accident.
Note that the three CSM's wear gold and scarlet lanyards on their left shoulders. They were attached to whistles in their left breast pockets. These lanyards became a distinct unofficial tradition for the 2nd Battalion The Nova Scotia Highlanders (Cape Breton) at the time.
