The photo was taken on Maynard Street, outside the rear doors of the Halifax Armouries.
On the far left of the photo, in the second row, standing with his hands on the end of his rifle, is Pte. James Edward Gear. He was later wounded but survived the war. He was awarded a Military Medal and served with the Cape Breton Highlanders during the Second World War.
