In the centre of the first seated row, with the cane, is the commanding officer of the Dartmouth Platoon, Lieut. Victor Guest Rae. Victor Rae was born in Glasgow, Scotland and was a Presbyterian clergyman. He originally enlisted in the 185th Battalion (Cape Breton Highlanders) but was soon transferred to the 219th Overseas Highland Battalion. He went overseas to England with the 219th and while there was transferred to the 85th Battalion (Nova Scotia Highlanders) where he joined them in France. After the Battle of Vimy Ridge in April, 1917, Victor Rae was evacuated to hospital with trench fever. He later joined the Canadian Chaplain Services and was demobilized in April, 1919.
